The Edmonton Tamil community, along with others around the world are deeply concerned about the living conditions and the treatment of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka. The Government continues to prohibit independent monitoring bodies and press members from entering the territory, making it impossible to verify reports of suffering of internally displaced people (IDP).
A large number of Tamil civilians, close to 300,000 according to estimates by the UN, have been evicted from the Vanni region during the past few months and are kept in concentration camps fenced with barbed wire and are heavily guarded by Sri Lankan Armed forces to prevent access in and out of the camps.
Human rights violations, forced disappearances, extra judicial executions, torture, rape and arbitrary detention is the unfortunate plight of our family members in Sri Lanka.
The aim of this forum is to engage in constructive dialogue that will result in concrete solutions for the Tamil people of Sri Lanka.
As members of the expatriate community in Edmonton we hope to provide a platform that will encompass the views of all who are concerned with the welfare of humanity, not just in Sri Lanka, but around the world.
